Behavioral Finance: How Participants Make Decisions

Posted by on December 14, 2017 in

Behavioral finance research shows most 401(k) participants are not active decision-makers.  In fact, most participants are dominated by five key behavioral traits: inertia, procrastination, choice overload, endorsement and framing. You can view a recording of that presentation in our webinar archive.  We ran out of time before being able to answer all of the questions that were submitted during the call, but Dr. Kasten was...

Posted by Fi360 Team on September 20, 2017 in

On Tuesday of this week, we conducted our quarterly Coaching Call for Designees on the topic of Fees, Services, and a Prudent Process for IRA Rollovers.  During the presentation, Robin Green, Chuck Hammond, and Duane Thompson looked at the changing environment for the IRA rollover market and what it means for advisors who are offering those services. For active AIF®, AIFA, and PPC designees who were not able to attend, a replay is available in the Designee Portal.  There were a number of questions that our panelists were not able to get to before the conclusion...

5 Factors To Consider Before Adding Newer Investments To Fiduciary Accounts

Posted by John Faustino, Chief Product & Strategy Officer on September 08, 2017 in Fiduciary Excellence Fund Analysis

While the three-year history is used as a gating factor for evaluating many investments, there may be instances where it’s prudent to select newer investments for fiduciary accounts. Waiting for three-years of history should not be a hard rule, but rather a guiding principle for evaluating investments with readily available characteristics. Here are five factors that should be considered in determining whether a new investment warrants consideration for a fiduciary account.

Are annual investment reviews enough?

Posted by Dave Palascak, AIF®, CFA on August 17, 2017 in Putting Process into Practice Spotlight on Practices

Errors of omission within the fiduciary process (not doing what is prudent or prescribed) are more common than errors of commission (doing something that is prohibited by law, regulation, or governing documents). Establishing and following clear, concise and practical policies and procedures for monitoring reduce compliance risks and help ensure that clients’ best interests are served.

The June 9 Fiduciary Deadline and Key Issues for Broker-Dealers

Posted by Fred Reish on May 09, 2017 in Fiduciary Basics Fiduciary Excellence In the News Regulatory Update

The new—and very broad—definition of fiduciary advice will apply on June 9. That means that investment recommendations to ERISA plans, participants or IRAs will be fiduciary advice. Broker-dealers and their advisors will, in essence, be co-fiduciaries for providing that advice. As a result, broker-dealers need to develop internal policies, procedures, training and supervision as quickly as possible in order to be in compliance by June 9. The areas of focus should be: Fiduciary education for home office management, supervisory, and sales and marketing personnel. As explained below, some of the fiduciary responsibilities will need to be satisfied by...

5 Benefits of Business Blogging

Posted by Renee Watkins, Marketing Specialist, fi360, Inc. on January 06, 2016 in

The other day I had a friend ask me about blogging and websites.  As a new business owner, she was instructed to create a blog or website.  She didn’t know much about either marketing platform.  So to make sure she had her bases covered, she chose to create a website that included a blog.  Smart move! However, it occurred to me that even though blogging is a very beneficial, cost-efficient marketing platform, it can also be intimidating to first time bloggers.  Therefore, for this week’s post I will be covering the...

Year End Giving

Posted by on December 23, 2015 in

By Ryan Lynch, Product Manager at fi360 If you provide financial planning services, chances are that the dwindling days of 2015 have prompted plenty of tax-planning questions from your clients.  From a strictly dollars and cents standpoint, charitable contributions are an effective way to reduce one’s tax liability.  This time of year is so important to 501(c)(3)s that Q4 has been dubbed “the Giving Season” in the nonprofit community.  And while sharing one’s treasure is both fiscally prudent and commendable, there are other means available to each and every soul that...

Conflicts of Interest: Walk away?

Posted by on December 21, 2015 in

By Rich Lynch, President of fi360 Even as the DOL’s proposed “Conflicts of Interest” Rule continues to dominate the attention of the financial services industry and its practitioners, it is clear to us that not everyone has a clear understanding of what, exactly, constitutes a conflict of interest.  One of the most common types of question we receive from advisors is for our opinion on whether a situation they are encountering qualifies as a conflict.  The short answer to that question is almost always, “if you felt compelled to ask, it’s...

"Pruning"

Posted by Ryan Lynch, AIF®, Product Manager, fi360, Inc. on December 03, 2015 in

“Today may be the enemy of your tomorrow”.  The opening line of Dr. Henry Cloud’s book, Necessary Endings, serves as a cautionary adage of the impact of now on later.  The average American adult makes 35,000 decisions per day:  a third round on the snooze button, left instead of right, wheat over white.  The sci-fi geek in me likes to consider that each decision spawns an alternate reality that continually reshapes one’s destiny at each fork in the road (think butterfly effect).  And while your bread choice at lunch probably...

The Biggest "Price Tag"

Posted by Jarred Riccadonna, Marketing Coordinator, fi360, Inc. on November 25, 2015 in

In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers.  After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth.  It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. Is it really not necessary, potentially embarrassing, or too hard?

Posted by J. Richard Lynch, AIFA®, President, fi360, Inc. on November 23, 2015 in

Most all of us remember growing up and fighting with our parents (usually mom) when they insisted that we do something we really didn’t want to do and they would often say it was “good for us.”  We didn’t want to do it most probably because from our perspective it was 1) not necessary, 2) potentially embarrassing, or 3) too hard.  When our parents held their ground and we did as they asked, we usually found we were glad to have done so.  A recent CEFEX certification followed a similar path. CEFEX, the Centre...

Ditch the Comfort Zone

Posted by Ryan Lynch, AIF®, Product Manager, fi360, Inc. on October 29, 2015 in

“If we don’t step out of the known – the comfort zone – we bring yesterday’s limited thinking into the present, therefore dooming the present to be just like the past” (Baron Baptiste).    For plan participants, we call the comfort zone inertia, and those who are not saving enough – or at all – are its victims.  Paradoxically, too much time spent in the comfort of familiarity robs us of true contentment (or in this case, financial security).  Ever kick on the cruise control and suddenly realize you’ve...

DOL’s “Conflicts of Interest Rule”: Two Views from the Trenches

Much has been written about the Department of Labor’s Conflicts of Interest Rule (Rule) ever since it was originally proposed in October 2010.  After an initial attempt and several years of reworking DOL reintroduced the Rule earlier this year.  There have been two comment periods and four days of hearings to solicit feedback from the public.  The hearings were held August 10th through the 13th and the second comment period ended on September 24th.  In total 3,131 comment letters and 28 petitions have been submitted, which is a very large number by any measure.  The overwhelming...

Seven qualitative factors for evaluating investments

Posted by Michael Limbacher, Product Manager, fi360, Inc. on October 09, 2015 in

Due diligence is the heart and soul of investment selection. A good due diligence process objectively whittles down the universe of available funds to just those that meet your high standards for inclusion in an investment portfolio. Investment due diligence typically begins on the quantitative side by evaluating funds against set benchmarks and in relation to peers.  The fi360 Fiduciary Score®, for example, is calculated using nine quantitative factors that we consider to be the minimum due diligence criteria that you should use when evaluating an investment.  But in addition to quantitative analysis, fiduciaries should consider applying...

GAO Says Clearer QDIA Guidelines Would Help Ease Sponsors’ Fiduciary Concerns

Posted by Duane Thompson, AIFA®, Senior Policy Analyst, fi360, Inc. on October 05, 2015 in

Although federal policymakers still maintain that Qualified Default Investment Alternatives (QDIAs) have been a huge success in drawing more employees into defined contribution plans, the independent auditing arm of the government says more could be done to improve plan fiduciaries’ understanding of the criteria used to select investment options. In August the Government Accountability Office reviewed QDIA regulations, in addition to three recent industry surveys, in writing the latest in a series of studies on improving defined contribution plans.  The GAO also interviewed 96 stakeholders, analyzed responses to a questionnaire from 227 plan sponsors, and later reached out to the...

Is it just me, or is every other financial article about “robos”?  First there was panic/fear when they were launched, followed by tales of why they would fail, and now a split in the public opinion about their future.  It appears the conclusion is they are “dead...
